Club Championship – Ullswater Triathlon
Seven hardy souls braved the somewhat challenging conditions to take part in the A W Jenkinson Ullswater Triathlon on Saturday 9th of July 2016.
With strong winds and at times heavy rain all of the sections of the event were difficult. The race started with the swim in Ullswater, and it was the first discipline that claimed Michelle McCrindle as the first casualty. The waves, some of which were around 1 meter high, meant an early withdrawal from the race due to shoulder injuries. The early leader out of the water was Craig Stitt, but Graeme Cross, Stuart Robertson & Emma Westmancott were not far behind. Ian Clark & Gordon Brown came out of the water around 6 minutes behind Craig.
The conditions did not improve once out on the bike, with a driving wind for the 2 lap course which made its way from Pooley Bridge towards Penrith, before heading to the A6 via Askham and Lowther Castle. The stretch of the course from Lowther back towards Penrith was the only segment which offered any respite from the wind, but on the turn towards the end of the lap the wind started to bite again. A strong bike section from Stuart, Graeme & Gordon saw them pass Craig on the bike before Transition 2.
Graeme Cross was first out on to the run course, followed by Stuart, Gordon, Craig, Emma and Ian, and on the run course, which was a 4 lap course skirting the edge of Ullswater, Graeme maintained his lead finishing the course in 02:46:47. The weather maintained its dreich and dreary conditions for the run phase, with the rain getting heavier as the run progressed. Stuart was second over the line, followed by Craig, Gordon, Ian & Emma. Emma finished an impressive 2nd in her age category
The final times were
